Speculum Artium is an international festival of new media culture which, every year, hosts academics and artists from all over the world. One of the most high-profile new media events in Europe took place in the post-industrial town of Trbovlje in Slovenia from 16. to 19. September.

We presented the citizenscience.si portal, an online hub for the exchange of information on citizen science in Slovenia.

ECS – A Community That Connects: Bringing Citizen Science Closer to Public Libraries

The event brings together librarians, researchers, and everyone interested in developing inclusive community-based practices. It will present the key achievements of the ECS project, the platform featuring educational materials and guidelines for libraries, examples of good practices from Slovenia, and the Citizen Science Network. The programme includes opportunities for networking and exchanging experiences, as well as a practical workshop where you will learn about concrete tools and approaches for developing citizen science activities.

The concluding SatCam event at the Noordung Center in Vitanje will bring together young people and decision-makers to discuss environmental challenges and the preservation of natural resources and environmental assets. Around 40 pupils are expected to attend, mostly 9th-grade primary school students, as well as younger pupils and secondary school students. Representatives from the Space Office, a researcher from the University of Maribor, and the association Youth for Climate Justice will also be present.

The first joint Slovenian–Indian Festival of Science, Innovation, Smart Technologies, and Economy took place in Ljubljana on September 25–26, 2025. The festival showcased the progress of both countries in scientific research and technological development, as well as the achievements of creative Slovenians and Indians with the goal of advancing and positioning both nations as developed countries in the global arena.

Citizen science was presented as a scientific method, along with the accomplishments of the Citizen Science Network, which brings together and connects various stakeholders in the field of citizen science.

In this episode of the Techno Podcast, we welcome Til Mlakar and Mitja V. Iskrić from the Central Technical Library at the University of Ljubljana. Both are active members of the Citizen Science Network and co-creators of the Slovenian portal citizenscience.si. Together, we will explore:

The 49th ZKD Forum, titled “Citizen Science and Crowd Work,” will take place. At the beginning, guest editor Dolores Mumelaš will briefly introduce the topic of citizen science and crowd work in a heritage environment.

The program will start with a lecture by Dr. Tomislav Ivanjek from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, who will present examples of crowd work and sources for a better understanding of the topic. He will emphasize the importance of public engagement in research, with a special focus on cultural heritage preservation, and discuss the differences between crowd work in heritage and business environments. He will introduce platforms such as Zooniverse, SciStarter, and CitSci, which enable citizens to participate in research, and provide advice on implementing crowd-supported systems.

Following the lecture, a panel discussion will take place, where panelists will share their experiences with citizen science, present specific projects and platforms, and analyze the advantages and challenges of this approach. They will highlight what they have learned through their projects and discuss some of the positive and negative aspects of crowd work.

Ingeborg Rudomino from the National and University Library in Zagreb will present the “HAWaton” project, an internet search competition that allows high school students to improve their digital skills through research and information gathering.

Marina Vidović Krušić from the Polytechnic in Križevci will present a project on the revitalization of the cultural heritage of the University of Applied Sciences in Križevci, through which members of the Alumni VGUK association have explored the history of the institution.

Sonja Galina from the State Archives in Varaždin will introduce the “Transcribathon Zagreb 2022” project as part of the Europeana+ initiative, which focuses on the digitization of handwritten documents and provides better access to archival materials.

Til Mlakar from the Central Technical Library of the University of Ljubljana will present the platform citizenscience.si, which offers a catalog of citizen science research projects in Slovenia and provides access to scientific infrastructure resources.

Sanja Jurković from the Ruđer Bošković Institute will discuss the citizen science group within the Zagreb Library Association and present the working group’s website. She will also introduce two sections published by the working group on social media and the project “Streets of Medieval Rulers.”

In the first part of the presentation, you will learn about some of the basic principles of citizen science and the funding opportunities in the European Research Area and in Slovenia. We will present and discuss the project of the Citizen Science Network in Slovenia, which will bring together various stakeholders in citizen science research, from public research and infrastructure organisations to individuals – representatives of the interested public.

We will also present the citizenscience.si platform, which is an online hub for the flow of information on citizen science in Slovenia.

Citizen Science is a recommended practice for open science in the Horizon Europe programme and is at the forefront of national policies on scientific research.

The aim of the workshop is to provide librarians with an introduction to the basic principles of Citizen Science research design and implementation.

We will learn about the five basic steps in research design, research planning and open research infrastructures that citizen science researchers can use in their work.
